“My experience with Simi over the past year has truly been transformational! As I began my journey I found myself in a relationship with my body that consisted of guilt, frustration, extra weight and a perpetual, internal negative sound track. “With my 40th birthday looming, I met with Simi to declare that I was exhausted from battling food. I was skeptical that her method would have any different results than my prior weight watchers, calorie counting, no carbs, paleo, cabbage soup experiments, I went for it. “When I first met Simi I was in a rough place both physically and emotionally. I had had some success losing weight with exercise and strict calorie counting, but increased work stress and a miscarriage after years of infertility had me depressed, eating my feelings, and quickly regaining the weight I had previously lost. Still I delayed in working with Simi because I did not think I was worth it. However, I am so glad I finally moved forward and decided to invest in myself! Within a few weeks of beginning to work with Simi I found the joy in my life again, lost weight without dieting, balanced my PCOS hormone imbalances, and discovered I was pregnant! “After completing one of Simi’s group programs, I decided to do individual coaching as a way to reinforce the tools that I learned during the group plan and re-focus on myself and my body. During the group program, Simi introduced me to the joys of cooking foods that were nutritious and delicious. She taught me how to navigate the kitchen and the grocery store. With the individualized coaching, I was able to hone these tools and really think consciously about what sounded and tasted good to me on a particular day. This program forced me to think about what I truly wanted every day. When I make each eating experience pleasurable, it helps me slow down, enjoy the moment, and savor the food so that I don’t overeat and eat things that I don’t really want. Contrary to what you may think about a health coaching program, I have not been consumed by food or thoughts of food–in fact, the opposite is true! “I really enjoyed the group program led by Simi. It was my first time really investing in my health and wellness, beyond paying for a gym membership. The group dynamic was key. While I know I’m not alone in my body issues, it was incredibly helpful to connect with women with common issues. These women shared thoughts I’ve had, things I’ve done. We talked through strategies that were easy to adopt and include in my daily life. Because of the group program, I began prepping meals on a weekly basis. Months after the program, I still do this. I was one of those girls you hated. I could eat anything and never gain a pound. Cookies, chips, Pepsi and candy were the four food groups that I abided by diligently. Then my 30’s came along and smacked me right in the face to let me know those days were over. Figuring it was just a phase and I could get back on track later I avoided my situation and continued living in my euphoric carb fueled heaven I’d come to love so much. As the clothing sizes began to increase and the skin started to dimple I decided this was something I needed to get under control, but how? Fueled by an intense motivation I headed to the nearest bookstore to pick up The South Beach Diet. After studying the first few chapters I went straight to the grocery to load up on my menu for the week. I made it to day 2. I quickly learned that structured diets don’t work for me. I found myself floundering when it came to dieting and exercise because these were things I never had to pay attention to and hence never learned how to do them. Simi’s approach is exactly what I needed. She taught me that it’s important to listen to my body and give it what it needs. Simi creates a safe, non-judgmental space that anyone can feel comfortable in. Simi’s program gave me a network of wonderful women that I can reach out to at anytime for support and strength. I never thought I’d work with a health coach. But I knew Simi from barre classes and, when she started her practice, I thought now this is a lady who could make coaching worthwhile. “When I decided earlier this year that I wanted to work with Simi, I had reached a big transitional period in my life; I had finished grad school, started my new career, moved back to Columbus and into a new apartment, and was getting ready to turn 30. This seemed like such an ideal time to start making some internal changes, as well. I’m someone who has always strived for that “ideal” body and weight. I’ve always felt like the body I have is not quite enough. Like a lot of girls I know, I had a tendency to hone in on my problem areas and think, “If I could just shave this much off of my arms/legs….” or “If only my stomach looked like this….” I’ve definitely fallen for several diet gimmicks; spending money on DVDs, meal plans, portion control containers, etc. All promising that “body I’ve always wanted,” feeding right into my own idea that the body I have right now is not good enough. I’m also someone who knows emotional eating very well. Sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and boredom have frequently been factors in my eating habits, leading me to binge eat on more than one occasion. Working with Simi these last 6 months has truly been a game changer. From the very beginning, Simi helped cultivate a much more kind, gentle, loving voice within. This has led to a kind of self-love/self-worth I never thought I was capable of. Simi has helped me see that there is no “ideal” body image/weight and that regardless of my size and shape, I am worth it. I deserve to be my happiest, most confident self, right now. She has taught me how to listen to what my body needs and to not ignore what she’s asking for. Intuitive eating has now taken the place of emotional eating. I started coaching with Simi at easily the craziest, most hectic time in my entire life. Two months before my wedding I was in the process of moving, crashed for three weeks on an air mattress in a friend’s apartment, and then lived in a hotel for another three weeks for a big trial that kept me working up to 20 hours a day at times. Oh yeah, I had to count RSVP cards, make table settings, etc. etc. Not exactly the ideal time to be focusing on diet and exercise. For about six months I had tried a number of crash diets and *shockingly* ended up gaining more weight back. I was stressed out and not quite at peace with my body. I also had serious concerns about what would happen when the month of my wedding I was living in a hotel and eating out every single day. So in the middle of all the crazy, I started working with Simi in order to prep for the big day. Simi did an amazing job giving me suggestions for how to keep a healthy lifestyle even the way I had to live at the time. My situation was not exactly “typical” but she worked with the options I had, and enabled me to stay on track. Simi guided me to make the best food choices possible given the circumstances. Even more importantly, coaching with Simi was key to my mental health during a very stressful time. Simi helped me to re-incorporate constant exercise into my life at a time when I so badly needed it. I learned to use exercise not only to benefit me physically, but mentally. “I started working with Simi after hearing about her from a friend of a friend that found success. The most intriguing part of the friend’s recommendation was that she was “happy.” Being happy while losing weight?!?! Sign me up! Even though I teach a dance cardio strength class I couldn’t stop my slow weight gain and decreasing energy levels. I did all of the apps and different diets and I was so frustrated, stressed and angry about being restricted and getting no where. Enter Simi and her amazing coaching. I am losing weight but that isn’t even why I love this so much. She gave me reasonable goals (about half had nothing to do with food or eating) and now they have become routine. I just started changing out to my summer wardrobe and the pants and shorts that didn’t fit last summer now slide right one. My muffin top has almost completely disappeared. Even this past month which involved a lot of birthday celebrations, traveling, and Easter I still managed to lose some weight without feeling restricted. If you think there is nothing left out there and you are just destined to be overweight/underweight, unhappy with your body, hating food, and mean to yourself, it just isn’t true!!!! “I first learned about Simi through a mutual friend who raved about her experience with her. At the time I had been thinking about new ways I could reinvigorate my health and weight loss goals as I had been at a standstill for quite a while. “Before working with Simi, I had been frustrated for years wanting to lose weight and be thinner, thinking that was the only way I could be happy. I tried all kinds of restrictive diets, only to feel more miserable, even if I did shed a few pounds. Through our work, I discovered interests and activities to create joy in my everyday life. I learned to reduce stress that way, by creating more joy, and I carved a path for myself to leave a job that wasn’t fulfilling so I could focus instead on my passions (both ones I knew and discovering new ones). Basically, I got to know myself all over again, and for the first time in seemingly ages, I liked what I saw! I also got pregnant during our time working together, and gained a greater appreciation for my body than I’ve ever had before. I really believe that the work Simi and I did is what has allowed me to be the healthiest version of myself, physically, mentally and emotionally, while going through this life (and body) changing experience of being pregnant!
While I know that this process of self discovery and self care will be a lifelong journey, for the first time that doesn’t scare me. I know Simi has given me the tools to continue evolving in my happiness and newfound confidence, and I actually look forward to continuing to learn about myself and explore my happiness. “I had recently moved to Ohio after college to start my first full time job in a city where I didn't know anyone. The result of my new post college lifestyle was weight gain along with constant hunger. I was eating healthy and exercising yet I was still gaining weight and didn't understand why.
